The Philadelphia Ballet's "Behind the Stage Door" is an interactive multimedia performance that explores the “invisible” forces that bring the ballet to life. Through a soundscape of diverse voices, original musical composition, dance, film, sculpture and interactive multimedia stage design, the piece illuminates the many personalities, stories, and experiences that underlie and make possible the transcendent art form that is the ballet.
The music was inspired by a series of interviews by filmmaker Heidi Saman, and short clips from those interviews are heard at the beginning of each scene. This original composition is a traditional score, but significant areas are open to interpretation and improvisations by each member of the ensemble, which was assembled specifically for this recording.
